The solver has been checked against 14 published tables from four manufacturers: Remington, Hornady, Norma and Nosler. It lands within a tenth of a percent of Remington's own velocity numbers, and checking that closely surfaced four separate findings, including a Remington wind drift column that is inconsistent with Remington's own velocities, and a Hornady ballistic coefficient that does not reproduce Hornady's own published table. The math is directly below.

What has been checked against published data, as of 2026-08-27

Four manufacturers. Fourteen published tables. Two drag models.

Remington, Hornady, Norma and Nosler. Nine cartridges, from .223 Remington to .338 Lapua Magnum. Both the G1 and G7 drag models. One table that crosses the speed of sound inside its own published rows, and two that are fully subsonic from the muzzle. Sixteen automated test cases check 14 distinct published tables: two of the fourteen are each checked twice, the Remington table under two candidate atmospheres and one Hornady .308 Winchester table under both drag models. Every case carries the manufacturer's source page, the date it was retrieved, and the published numbers next to what the solver computed.

Remington SKU 29027, .30-06 Springfield, 150 grain Core-Lokt Tipped, at 500 yards, computed under Army Standard Metro atmosphere against Remington's published figures. This is the case shown to the digit because it is the one with a full velocity, energy and wind drift comparison. The other 13 tables are checked the same way, against whichever columns each manufacturer actually publishes, and the four findings below are what checking all of them turned up.

Four manufacturers, four different findings

Remington: the atmosphere was Army Standard Metro, not ICAO, and the drift column does not match the velocity column.

Established by bisecting for the ballistic coefficient that independently reproduces each published velocity. The required value comes out flat across every range and sits 1.6 percent above Remington's printed 0.415, which is exactly the density ratio between ICAO and Army Standard Metro. A wrong drag curve shape would show up as a trend across that range; a flat offset means the atmosphere assumption was wrong, not the curve. Separately, reconstructing time of flight from Remington's own published velocity column shows their printed wind drift figures are about 0.27 inch inconsistent with their own velocities. Neither finding is a knock on Remington: a printed box table is a marketing document, not a lab report, and this is exactly what an audit trail is built to catch.

Hornady: a published ballistic coefficient that does not reproduce Hornady's own table.

Hornady also computes against Army Standard Metro. But for the .338 Lapua Magnum 285 grain ELD Match, their published G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.789 does not reproduce Hornady's own published table: the value that does is 0.831, flat to 0.15 percent across the table and 5.3 percent above the printed number. This case ships in the test suite as a deliberate failure, pinned to a band so the deviation cannot silently drift. A page that names the one case it does not match, and says exactly why, is worth more to this audience than a page that only reports wins.

Norma: the opposite atmosphere.

Norma's tables are computed against the ICAO standard atmosphere, the reverse of Remington and Hornady. This is the most important of the four findings: the reference atmosphere is a property of the manufacturer's table, not an industry constant. Generalizing the Remington result into one global default would have put a systematic 1.8 percent density error into every load from a European manufacturer, in the direction that makes a solution look confidently wrong rather than obviously broken.

Nosler: no published ballistic coefficient at all.

Nosler's Trophy Grade pages print velocity, energy and drop, and no ballistic coefficient of any kind. Fitting a single G1 coefficient to their published table does not hold flat: it droops about 1 percent by 800 yards. Fitting a G7 coefficient to the same rows stays flat to 0.25 percent, so Nosler's tables are shaped like a G7 curve. Because Nosler prints no BC, the coefficient used here was derived by fitting it to Nosler's own table. That checks the shape of the curve, not an independent ballistic coefficient, and this page is not presenting it as one.

Why this exists.

Solvers in this category keep making the same four moves. Software that was bought once gets migrated onto a subscription. The answer arrives as a number with no working shown, so when two apps disagree about the same shot there is no way to tell which one is wrong. The weather comes from an API, which assumes a bar of signal in places that have never had one. And the interface grows until finding your own rifle takes longer than the shot does.

DirectDOPE starts from three assumptions instead: you own what you bought, you are standing somewhere with no signal, and you have a right to see the math.

Nothing is behind a login

There is no login anywhere in the app, including at purchase. An offline or failed entitlement check never revokes something you have already unlocked. Your rifle profiles and DOPE log are files on your phone, not rows in a database that can go away.

The whole solve runs local

Drop, wind drift, spin drift, Coriolis, energy, and time of flight are all computed on the phone. Profiles, DOPE log, and truing history are stored locally. Station pressure comes from the phone's own barometer, read where you are actually standing, which beats a weather API pulling from an airport forty miles and a ridge away. The sight picture and the audit page render with the radio off.

One carve-out, stated rather than buried: the optional photo-to-load ingestion in the Field Pack talks to a server. It is a prepare-at-home convenience and is never needed while you are shooting.

See the shot, not a number to translate.

Most solvers hand you a number and leave the rest to you: 4.2 mils, 14 MOA, hold somewhere on a reticle you may or may not own. DirectDOPE draws the animal instead, at the true angular size it will actually occupy in your glass at that range, and marks the calculated aim point directly on it. At 380 yards, this is how large the vitals actually look, and this is where the bullet is going.

No brand-name reticle is shown, named, or implied. The aim marker is generic, which means the picture works the same whatever scope is on the rifle.

It answers where do I hold, not what number do I have to remember and convert under time pressure.

Every solve carries its full working.

Trust is not something a ballistics app should ask for. Every solve in DirectDOPE opens onto an audit page carrying the entire calculation:

  • Every input, with its unit and where it came from: manufacturer-claimed, measured, or trued by you. These are never silently merged into one number.
  • The derived air density and speed of sound.
  • Which pressure kind was used, station or sea-level corrected, and which atmosphere model.
  • The drag model, and the actual drag coefficient at the bullet's speed.
  • The integrator, and how many steps it ran.
  • A decomposition of exactly how many clicks each effect contributed: elevation, wind, spin drift, and the rest.
  • A button that copies the entire working, in full, so you can hand it to someone else or check it by hand.

Where this stops.

Stated up front, so nobody has to ask.

No maps, no parcels, no land status.

There are no maps, no property boundaries, no public land layers, and no legality claims anywhere in this app, and none are planned. DirectDOPE answers what your bullet does. It does not answer whether you are allowed to be standing where you are standing.

No brand-name reticle library.

No manufacturer's reticle is depicted, named, or supported. The sight picture uses a generic aim marker instead, which is a different approach, not a smaller version of the same one.

Verified against 14 published tables, not against everything.

As of 2026-08-27 the solver has been checked against 14 published tables from four manufacturers: Remington, Hornady, Norma and Nosler. Nine cartridges, both the G1 and G7 drag models, one table that crosses the speed of sound inside its own rows and two that are fully subsonic, all of it level fire. What that does not cover: no manufacturer publishes a table that isolates inclined fire, spin drift, Coriolis or aerodynamic jump, so none of those are checked against published data, and no manufacturer outside the United States and Sweden has been checked. And one case does not match: Hornady's own published ballistic coefficient for one load does not reproduce Hornady's own table, shown further up this page rather than left out. When coverage changes again, this page will say so with the same kind of specific numbers, never as a general claim of accuracy.

Nothing has been shot yet.

There has been no live-fire validation. The ground truth used so far is a manufacturer's own published data, not a chronograph and not a target. A live-fire protocol is written and planned as a future gate. It has not run, and this page will say so until it has.

Questions worth asking.

Is this just another Strelok clone?

Strelok Pro and Applied Ballistics are mature solvers that a lot of people rely on, and this page is not pretending otherwise. What is different here: one purchase instead of a subscription, no account anywhere including at purchase, a full audit trail instead of a black box, a sight picture instead of a reticle library, and a policy of stating exactly what has been verified rather than making a general accuracy claim. What is also different, honestly: those apps have years of runtime and user feedback behind them and this one does not. That is precisely why this page shows the actual published numbers, checked against four manufacturers, instead of asking for trust.

How do I know your numbers are right?

Check them. The comparison above gives the computed and published values to the digit, so the delta is yours to verify. Ask at support@directdope.app and the full derivations will be sent to you. Inside the app, every solve carries an audit page at the same level of detail plus a copy-everything button. As of today that verification covers 14 published tables from four manufacturers, nine cartridges, both the G1 and G7 drag models, level fire only, stated plainly rather than rounded up. Finding inconsistencies in more than one manufacturer's own published data, including a Remington drift column that disagrees with Remington's own velocities and a Hornady ballistic coefficient that does not reproduce Hornady's own table, is offered as evidence of the process, not as a finished accuracy claim.

Has it actually been shot?

Not yet. It has been checked against a manufacturer's published table, which is a numeric check and not a live-fire one. A live-fire validation protocol is written and planned. Until it runs, this page will keep saying exactly this.

What happens when the company disappears?

The app is built so that question has a real answer instead of a reassurance. There is no license server it phones home to, no account it needs, and an offline or failed entitlement check never revokes something already unlocked. If TerminaLLM LLC stopped existing tomorrow, the solver, your profiles, and your DOPE log keep working, because none of it was ever waiting on permission from a server. What is not promised: that a delisted app stays available in the Play Store forever, or that a phone lost without a backup can be un-lost. That is why local file backup and export is a feature rather than an afterthought.

Does it need a signal, a rangefinder, or a Kestrel?

No to all three. Every input can be typed in by hand. Station pressure reads off the phone's barometer. Nothing about running a solve depends on a paired device or a bar of signal.

Does it include maps, parcels, or public land data?

No, deliberately. DirectDOPE answers where a bullet lands, not whether you are allowed to be standing where you fired from. That is a scope decision, not a missing feature, and it is not planned to change.

What about my scope's specific reticle?

DirectDOPE does not depict or claim support for any brand-name reticle. The sight picture renders the target at true angular size with a generic aim marker, which works the same regardless of what reticle is on the rifle.

What cartridges and bullets does it handle?

The physics is general: drag, atmosphere, spin drift, Coriolis, aerodynamic jump, inclined fire. Any load with a known ballistic coefficient can be entered. Verification against published data is the slow, honest part, and today that means 14 published tables across four manufacturers and nine cartridges, all level fire. Inclined fire, spin drift, Coriolis and aerodynamic jump are not yet checked against any published table, because no manufacturer publishes one that isolates them.

Android first. The architecture is built so iOS is not blocked later, but there is no iOS date to give.
